In the video, Rob makes a subtle misrepresentation which is the thrust to the whole book. He prepares us the reader to recieve his argument by saying that, at the center of the Gospel is this idea that Jesus saves us from God. This is the only premise for his follow up question, “What kind of God is it that we need to be saved from?” and then launches into his paradigm that we need to re examine the gospel message.
The problem is that God made peace with men through Jesus Christ, not that Jesus rescued us from God. He has to subtly change the message to make a platform for his argument. But with the proper perspective, he has no platform for the argument or the book.
And by the way, 1 John, 1 Peter, and - heck the whole Bible - lets the person who actually reads it know that you can evaluate and discern between a person who knows Christ and one who doesn't, and it does command the reader to guard the message and protect the Bride of Christ by getting rid of those things and people that would pervert it. If you speak and listen to a distortion of the Gospel long enough, your thinking will be skewed little by little over time, until you end up so far out of the Gospel that you can't even recognize that the thing you teach anymore isn't what you started with.
